Qualified research organizations are encouraged to submit applications between November 15 and December 15, 2014 for access to confidential DAWN or NSDUH data through the Data Portal. Research projects should propose use of:

DAWN 2004-2011 Emergency Department data;

DAWN 2003-2010 Medical Examiner data;

NSDUH 2004-2013; or

NSDUH 2008-2012 Adult Clinical Interview data.

The Data Portal is a secure virtual computing environment facilitated through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA). It is designed to provide authorized researchers access to confidential data for approved research projects. The goal of the Data Portal is to maximize the use of data collected by CBHSQ for important research while conforming to Federal law and protecting identifiable data from disclosure.

The summary report and detailed tables present a first look at results from the 2013 NSDUH, an annual survey of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States aged 12 years old or older. Both the report and detailed tables present national estimates of rates of use, numbers of users, and other measures related to illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products, with a focus on trends between 2012 and 2013 and from 2002 to 2013, as well as differences across population subgroups in 2013. NSDUH national estimates related to mental health and NSDUH State-level estimates related to both substance use and mental health will be published in separate releases in the fall of 2014.

Updated files include revised mental illness variables that are based on a revised statistical model which predicts whether an adult NSDUH respondent had serious, moderate, mild, or no mental illness. The revised mental illness variables in the 2008 to 2011 NSDUH public-use data files are now comparable to the mental illness variables available in the 2012 NSDUH data file. For more information on the updated variables, users may refer to the "New and Corrected Data Since Last Release" section of the codebooks for each year. Additional information on the revised model is available in the technical report from SAMHSA.

The 2-Year R-DAS file is available for analysis using the Restricted-use Data Analysis System (R-DAS). The NSDUH 2-Year R-DAS file includes a number of geographic variables that are unavailable in NSDUH public-use files.

The NSDUH is the primary source of national and state-level estimates on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population. The survey is also a source of national estimates on mental health measures such as serious mental illness (SMI), depression, and treatment. NSDUH data are collected annually through nationally representative interviews with approximately 70,000 randomly selected individuals aged 12 and older. The NSDUH is conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
