TEDS-D provides descriptive information about discharges from alcohol or drug treatment in facilities that report to individual state administrative data systems. Demographic information such as gender, race, ethnicity, education, and employment status, among others, are included in the data. The reason for discharge and the length of time in treatment are also included in the file. Substances reported in TEDS-D include alcohol, cocaine and crack, marijuana and hashish, heroin, nonprescription methadone, other opiates and synthetics, stimulants, tranquilizers, sedatives, and over-the-counter medications, among others.

TEDS-D is one component of the Behavioral Health Services Information System (BHSIS), maintained by the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality (CBHSQ), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). A sister data system, TEDS-A, records admissions to treatment facilities.
